MR SMARTY PANTS SERVING BOARD,

ARTS

I AM Marcel Venter AND AM 18 years young, REPRESENTING GENERATION Z (BORN FROM 1995 – ). I SPEAK English at the University and Afrikaans, English and Portuguese at home AND MY FAVOURITE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS ARE Facebook and WhatsApp. I HAIL FROM Pretoria-North IN THE Gauteng PROVINCE AND COMPLETED GRADE 12 AT THE Hoërskool Wonderboom. I AM STYDYING Dance AT THE FACULTY OF The Arts AND STAY AT home and travel to and from Campus daily. MY STUDIES ARE FINANCED BY NSFAS. I AM the first PERSON IN MY FAMILY TO ENROL AT UNIVERSITY. I CHOSE TUT AS MY ACADEMIC HOME BECAUSE I have been influenced and inspired to study here by several dance trainers, including a couple of TUT choreographers and dancers who I was fortunate enough to work with. I WOULD RATE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS 8/10. IN MY OPINION THE UNIVERSITY COULD IMPROVE THE PROCESS BY adding first-years to the system earlier to simplify the issuing of student cards. I KNOW I HAVE TO DO MY OWN PART, BUT THE UNIVERSITY CAN ASSIST ME TO MAKE A SUCCESS OF MY FIRST YEAR BY: My department has advised us well on what it takes to make a success of your first year. THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY IS that at school you have teachers that constantly remind you of what needs to be done. At university it’s up to you to meet deadlines. THE MAJOR MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE OF MY GENERATION IS that our marks at high school determine our success at university. THE PERSON/s WHO HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE ARE Miss Janelle du Toit and Miss Samantha Papastefanou BECAUSE, as my high school dance teachers, they have pushed me to become better and better. They have always encouraged me to reach my goals, whether it was a dance competition, or a normal term exam. They believed in me, even when I doubted myself. EACH SOUTH AFRICAN CAN DO HIS/HER BIT TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN BY standing together as a nation in unity. AFTER COMPLETING MY STUDIES I WANT TO become a performing artist. I also want to start a non- profitable dance company to help less fortunate people who have a passion to dance to achieve their dreams, like I have been helped to achieve mine.

I KNOW I HAVE TO DO MY OWN PART, BUT THE UNIVERSITY CAN ASSIST ME TO MAKE A SUCCESS OF MY FIRST YEAR BY supplying me with the necessary equipment I need for my course. THE MAJOR MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE OF MY GENERATION IS that we expect everything to fall into our laps. THE PERSON WHO HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE IS my best friend BECAUSE he taught me that I should always have an open and positive mind set. EACH SOUTH AFRICAN CAN DO HIS/HER BIT TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN BY helping others. People should be on the lookout to help each other, rather than searching for multiple ways to abuse the system and gain from other peoples’ misfortunes. AFTER COMPLETING MY STUDIES I WANT TO register as an architect and start my journey towards making a difference and leaving something behind to represent who and what I am.
